Day 3 of AAO 2024 saw the last full day of the Meeting’s academic program and industry exhibition, with plenty of pearls to be uncovered.
We’re over the hump here in Chicago, with more than half of the world’s marquee ophthalmic event, the 128th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO 2024), in the books.
We covered some serious scientific sessions today, and we’ll get to that—but first, important things first. The quality of booth snacks at this conference has been off the charts, and a brief discursus is in order.
Your correspondent has never seen freshly baked anything come from a booth at an ophthalmology conference, but here at AAO 2024 in Chicago, they are in abundance. From piping hot chocolate and cherry scones delivered by an oven-mitt clad attendant at the Apellis booth, to oven-fresh chocolate cookies at AbbVie and others, there were plenty of sweet treats to go around.

Sweet treats that ultimately served to fuel another day of ophthalmic action, where some of the hottest topics in ophthalmology took center stage. In retina, geographic atrophy (GA) seems to be on everyone’s lips, with the debate around complement inhibition heating up.
Our first highlight session covers a Day 3 session on GA, including top experts wading into the complement inhibition controversy, and more on the present and future treatment and management of this disease. Check it out now!
Our second piece of coverage was inclined towards the supremely practical, with members of the AAO’s Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee’s retina panel presenting key takeaways and consensus recommendations on topics from across the retinal world. From the real deal behind vitamins in retinitis pigmentosa to the case for teleretinal screening for diabetic retinopathy, there’s plenty in this one that you can use in your clinic today—so don’t miss out.
Our final session finds us in the realm of oculoplastics. It was about more than just aesthetics, as presenters dealt with more vital topics like dry eye and more. Also a part of this session was the Ruedemann Lecture, awarded to ocularist Marie-France Clermont, who delivered a presentation on lower eyelid retraction in the anophthalmic Socket. Get into the full details and read now.
That’s it for another big day here at AAO 2024 in Chicago. With sunny weather and no sign of the energy from Day 1 subsiding, don’t forget to join us for another full day of coverage tomorrow!
