An Inside Look at the Fight for Sight, The New Generation of Genomic Tools and More on ARVO 2025 Day 5

ARVO 2025’s final day saw inspiring talks from both inside and outside of the vision science lab.

It’s all over here in Salt Lake City for the annual meeting of The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO 2025), and what a conference it’s been.

At five days long, ARVO is often considered a marathon conference of sorts in the ophthalmic meeting world—but it doesn’t feel like it. Even in the Annual Meeting’s final moments here on Day 5, the sessions are as packed with people, the debates as lively and the energy of new ideas as palpable as on Day 1.

But before we get to our highlight sessions, a thank you is in order to the tens of thousands of our readers who tuned in to our ARVO 2025 coverage throughout the week. Much gratitude for joining us on our journey through the galaxy of cutting-edge eye care on display here in Utah, and see you soon for more ophthalmology meeting coverage.

On to highlight sessions, and our first one, the closing plenary, was as inspiring as it was informative. As opening speaker Dr. John-Ross Rizzo (United States) pointed out, there’s a massive difference between visual function and functional vision—and a distinguished panel of experts from across the sciences described their experiences either living with visual impairment, treating those living with it, or both.

Our second and final highlight session struck on a familiar theme for ARVO 2025: inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and how we diagnose, treat and understand them. In this session, five top genetics researchers showcased a variety of new tools beyond traditional sequencing that are upending the way we approach heritable disease. Read on for the genomic tools redefining the future of IRDs here now!

That’s all she (or we) wrote for ARVO 2025 here in beautiful Salt Lake City. See you again soon and stay tuned to our socials for even more session coverage coming out of the year’s biggest vision research meeting here
