Paradigm-Shifting Innovation Headlines Day 2 at ASCRS 2025

Day 2 at ASCRS 2025 saw the first full day of American cataract and refractive action, with an emphasis on how new technology is changing the face of the field.

The calm of Day 1 at this year’s edition of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Annual Meeting (ASCRS 2025) has subsided—and with delegates fully arrived and rested, Day 2 saw packed symposium halls and peak foot traffic at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The theme of Day 2 was clearly on innovation and the push to adopt new technologies that are elevating patient outcomes both in and out of the operating room.

The digital operating room is one such innovation that is gaining momentum in the cataract and refractive space, and a session on the topic is one of our highlight symposia for the day. American experts like Drs. Paul Singh, John Hovanesian, Robert Weinstock and more discussed the benefits and implications for the transition both in and out of the clinic. From ergonomic relief to a future of greater precision and patient safety, read now about why leaders in the field feel that digital OR technology is finally ready to take its place in clinics worldwide.

Saturday on the Main Stage also saw a spirited, broad-reaching discussion on innovation take center stage. Anterior segment pioneer Dr. Reay Brown went deep on the philosophy of innovation in ophthalmology, including why being delusional might not be such a bad thing. Prof. Damien Gatinel (France) also touched on his deeply personal relationship with the pioneering spirit in his Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture, where he mixed in some of his next-generation research on intraocular lenses with deeply personal anecdotes on his journey toward making the discoveries driving cataract and refractive outcomes to new heights.
