Johnson & Johnson (New Jersey, United States) has announced the regional launch of its TECNIS Odyssey intraocular lens (IOL), bringing its new generation of presbyopia-correcting IOLs (PC-IOL) to patients in Europe, the Middle East and Canada.

Designed to provide a full range of quality vision with minimal dependence on glasses, this novel IOL is built to meet the evolving needs of cataract patients worldwide.

A broader launch for a growing need

The TECNIS Odyssey IOL is the latest addition to Johnson & Johnson’s TECNIS platform. Described by the company as the fastest-growing presbyopia-correcting IOL in the United States, this lens is now rolling out to more global markets and is aimed at patients eager for spectacle independence and sharp, continuous vision.

Peter Menziuso, company group chairman at Johnson & Johnson Vision, emphasized the global significance of the launch: “TECNIS Odyssey IOL addresses a significant unmet need for cataract patients seeking greater spectacle independence. Now—together with TECNIS PureSee—TECNIS Odyssey IOL elevates the strength and depth of our global IOL portfolio, meeting the diverse needs of today’s aging population.”

A closer look at the features

Johnson & Johnson has highlighted the key features of the TECNIS Odyssey IOL designed to support a broad range of visual needs:

  • Precise vision at all distances

The TECNIS Odyssey IOL delivers crisp, clear vision at all distances. Whether patients are reading, driving or navigating daily tasks, this lens helps them maintain independence and visual comfort. According to the company, 94% of patients reported satisfaction with their overall vision without glasses.

  • Uninterrupted visual range

Unlike traditional multifocal lenses that may have visual “gaps,” Odyssey’s freeform diffractive surface ensures continuous, smooth vision from near to far. Ninety-six percent (96%) of patients were reportedly satisfied with reading smartphones or tablets, and 97% were happy with their distance vision.

  • Comfort in any lighting

Night vision challenges are a common concern for cataract patients. TECNIS Odyssey is specifically engineered to minimize halos and glare—delivering superior image quality day and night. Ninety-two percent (92%) of patients reported satisfaction with night activities like reading street signs or seeing steps clearly.

Early clinical experience with the lens

Professor Beatrice Cochener-Lamard, head of the ophthalmology department at Brest University Hospital in France, shared her early clinical perspective: “What sets the TECNIS Odyssey IOL apart is its ability to deliver consistent visual outcomes across a wide range of patients, due to its advanced design with higher tolerance to residual refractive error.”

The launch of TECNIS Odyssey IOL complements Johnson & Johnson’s growing family of advanced IOL technologies:

  • TECNIS Odyssey IOL: Now available in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Japan, Europe, the Middle East and Canada
  • TECNIS PureSee IOL: Available in Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Japan, APAC and Latin America (not yet PMA approved in the U.S.)

Together, these lenses provide a broad spectrum of solutions for presbyopia correction—empowering clinicians to personalize treatment and enhance visual outcomes.

Why it matters

Cataracts and presbyopia are leading causes of vision impairment among aging populations. Currently, 94 million people aged 50+ live with moderate-to-severe distance vision impairment or blindness that could be corrected through lens replacement surgery.1

Presbyopia typically becomes noticeable around age 40 and affects the ability to focus on nearby objects.2 Addressing both conditions with a full-range IOL during cataract surgery provides a strategic opportunity to restore functional vision across all distances—from near to far.
