Given that cataract is a critical issue to address for the area of avoidable blindness, it would be remiss if we glossed over the original manufacturer of the IOL. So we won’t. Rayner produced the first IOL at the company’s instrument workshop in Brighton, U.K., and the first operation was performed in 1949.
